Youth Science Classes
Our Fall session is now open.
The fall 2024 class session begins October 14th and runs through November 22nd. All classes will have an enrollment limit of 16 students. Courses cost $80 per student.
The following classes are offered in the fall of 2024:
Under the Sea, Ages 6-8
Wednesdays 4:00-5:00, EHS Room 225, October 16 - November 20
Have you ever wondered how fish breathe underwater or why the ocean gets darker as it gets deeper? Come dive with us into the five depth zones of the ocean as we discover what goes on under the sea. In this course, we will investigate ocean currents, examine aquatic mysterties, and unearth principles behind bioluminescence!
Starsplosion, Ages 9-11
Mondays 3:00-4:00, EHS Room 203, October 14 - November 18
3...2...1...LIFTOFF! Have you ever seen a rocket launch? How do stars shoot across the night sky? What is inside a black hole? In this course, we'll learn the fundamentals of space and astronomy. We will conduct experiements that demonstrate the awesomeness of astrophysics and simulate real life astronomical missions. Along the way we’ll encounter the curiosities of the cosmos, getting up close and personal with the complexities of galaxies, comets, black holes, supernovas, and more! We hope you join us on our adventure through God’s gift of a universe!
Nature Investigators, Ages 9-11
Fridays 3:30-4:30 p.m., EHS Room 225, October 18 - November 22
Isn’t it crazy how much is going on around us everyday! A bee dancing from flower to flower in our backyard, acorns falling to the ground at the park, the fish swimming with you in a lake, or even the germs within a cut. There is a whole new world just under our noses; we just need to look for it! Join us as we step into God’s creation and investigate the relationships between living organisms, their structures, and the environments they live in.
Radical Reactions, Ages 12-14
Thursdays 12:00-1:00 p.m., EHS Room 203, October 17 - November 21
How do we exploure the world through chemsitry? In the lab, of course! We will build a toolbox of lab techniques that will prepare you for scientific discovery and a deeper connection with our Creator. Explore the universe through chemistry in this class, Radical Reactions!
Techniques in Biotechnology, High School (ages 14-18)
Wednesdays, 5:00-6:00 p.m., EHS 221, October 16 - November 20
Are you interested in a career in biotechnology and research? In this class, students will learn modern research techniques such as aseptic technique, PCR and gel electrophoresis, pipetting and spectrophotometry, and more! This is a great course for older students interested in biotechnology research!
Training in Biomedical Engineering, High School (ages 14-18)
Fridays, 5:00-6:30 p.m., KLAG 260, October 18 - November 22
Students interested in bioengineering will have the opportunity to explore a variety of methods associated with the design and construction of devices. We will learn 3D drawing using SolidWorks software, as well as techniques such as 3D printing, 3D bioprinting, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, and more.
General Information
The Science Outreach Program offers science classes for children in our community during the fall and spring semesters. These classes allow students to learn about the wonders of God’s creation in a laboratory using equipment not readily available elsewhere. These classes are experiential, hands-on, and lab-based.
Each class is held once a week and is completed within one semester. Class size is limited, and topics vary each session and semester. Please contact the Science Outreach Program with questions about the classes.
Instructors
The classes are taught by 麻豆社 Fox undergraduate students majoring in science and education. Each class is team-taught with two instructors, giving each student more one-on-one assistance.
All student teachers receive lesson planning, delivery, and classroom management training and work closely with the Science Outreach Program director to create and deliver their courses.
Class Fees & Scholarships
The subsidized class fee helps to cover the cost of instructor payroll, class supplies, and field trip expenses, if applicable. Fees may vary from class to class depending on lab and/or field trip expenses.
麻豆社 Fox University makes every effort to keep the cost of these classes as low as possible while maintaining the highest possible quality of instruction. Please contact the Science Outreach Program via email (scienceoutreach@georgefox.edu) to inquire about need-based scholarships.

Directions to 麻豆社 Fox
The youth science classes are held in the Edwards-Holman Science Center building or the Roberts Center building on the 麻豆社 Fox University campus in Newberg, Oregon. Please see the campus map for the location of EHS, Roberts Center and visitor parking lots. You will be given a parking pass on the first day of class.
The Edwards-Holman Science Center (EHS) is directly behind the Wood-Mar building off Meridian Street. Upon reaching downtown Newberg, follow 99W to Meridian Street. Turn north onto Meridian, and follow it for two blocks. Make a right into the 麻豆社 Fox parking lot.
The Roberts Center is located off of East Sherman Street. From Portland Rd/Highway 99, turn North onto N. Villa Rd. and left onto East Sherman Street. Follow it to the end of the street and turn right. Enter in the Roberts Center West Wing.
